Mountain Hardwear Coolidge Trunks : They Rock

A few weeks ago I took a long awaited trip to Indian Creek, Utah, outside of Moab, and had fun putting my new Mountain Hardwear Coolidge shorts through their paces. I guess that's the polite way to put it; the reality is I beat the spunk out of these climbing-inspired shorts for days on end.

I wore them through a few thousand feet of climbing, I grated them on the sandstone walls, I took the biggest fall of my life in them, I bled on them, I spilled food on them. Then I got home, washed them, and they look brand new. No stains, no broken stitches, no abrasions. That's pretty awesome. I'm a convert.

On the style front, the shorts are hip. With a 14" inseam, they're great for climbing. Normal length shorts tend to creep up my legs thanks to my harness, and I often look like I'm wearing jogging shorts from 1985. Not so with these. I dig the two-tone stripe down the side (I have the charcoal/moon dust version), and I love the fit. There's no elastic to wear out, but there are belt loops. That's perfect -- elastic waistband shorts can sometimes bunch up beneath my harness and cause chafing.

Functionally, these shorts rock. I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's as if Mountain Hardwear hired its clothing designers from the labs of NASA. No detail is left out. That two-tone stripe down the side? It's made of a proprietary fabric called Switchback Plus, which is a stretchy nylon/elastane blend that allows for great freedom of motion. Perfect for an athletic climbing short. The rest of the Coolidge Trunk is made of a bombproof nylon weave that stands up to being dragged along sandstone for pitches at a time.

My trunks have rear pockets, two hand pockets, and a really cool thigh pocket that is perfect for keys or an energy bar. To top it all off, its gusseted inseam adds a ton of freedom of motion.

I'm excited to wear these shorts all summer long. When I'm not climbing, they'll make great swim trunks.

Bottom Line: Indestructible, technical climbing shorts that double as great board shorts. - N.W. (June '08)

Worldwide there are more than 12,000 species of ferns. In New Zealand, the silver fern is the national symbol. According to Maori culture, the unfurling tip of the fern, called a "koru," represents the cycle of life and death. This image is often used in art and jewelry.
