Wigam Weather Right, Weather Warrior, and Weather Shield Socks
When almost every weather map I looked at was showing hot temps and sunshine, I could only curse at the lousy weather we were receiving in the Northwest this spring. Cool to cold temps and unending streams of rain were our past, present, and unforeseeable future. Still, as the old saying goes, there's no bad weather...just bad clothing. Nowhere is that more true than on your feet. Bad footwear--shoes or socks--can make an outdoor trip in inclement weather downright miserable. For a month, I laughed at the rain and cold temps--or at least my feet did, thanks to Wigwam's Weather series of medium-weight socks. I test three versions: the Weather Right boot sock ($18), the Weather Warrior boot sock ($14.99), and the Weather Shield crew sock (above, left).
Some people might be fine with just one sock model, but I appreciated having the versatility of all three. I enjoyed the luxurious cushioning of the Warrior, pictured at left, especially when the terrain got rough and rocky. When the rain was really pouring down and I had to trudge through puddles that offered no escape, the Shield was my best friend. The Weather Right helped me enjoy a hike when the temperature notched up a few degrees. Both the Shield and the Warrior feature the softness and insulating properties of merino wool; I liked the Warrior best for times I wanted a full boot-length sock. The Shield contains a bit more wool and seemed to be slightly warmer than the Warrior, but with a lower cut. The Weather Right is a bit more lightweight than the other two models, doesn't have merino fibers, and is promoted as the ultimate boot sock. I thought it might be nice for boot wearers who need every day comfort and temperature control while on the job. All of these socks contain Outlast fibers, which are designed to reduce sweating, absorb extra heat generated by activity, and release heat from the body when it's needed. I'm no materials scientist, but the socks definitely live up to my expectations. Three sizes and a variety of colors are available. Grab a few pairs of the Weather line and laugh at whatever weather that's dished out by Mother Nature. Bottom Line: I like the comfort and temperature control of Wigwam's Weather Shield, Weather Warrior, and Weather Right. They're top-of-the line in my book because they're comfortable in a variety of temperatures.-- G.P. (June, '10) BUY ONLINE : Weather Shield ($12).
