ULU is a young company; they’ve been in business since 2003. So, if one were suspicious of the new kid, one might think the new kid might not quite have her act together. One would be wrong.

ULU seeks to make shoes and boots that “capture the harmony of style and function.” Good plan. Their footwear is inspired by the people and cultures of the eight countries of the circumpolar region. Do you know exactly what the Circumpolar region is? I didn’t so I looked it up: Canada, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Russia and Sweden.

Here's what Ulu says about the region: "Every traveler to the Circumpolar Region is both eclipsed and enlightened by its splendor. Flora and Fauna subsist in delicate balance with mighty rivers and silvery peaks. So it is too, that the Circumpolar people have lived and breathed with this land for centuries. Their spirit is independent, their approach to hardship resourceful, and their friendliness heart warming."

Pretty evocative for a shoe company-- even if they come from a small, private company in Burlington, Vermont. Made in America. Inspired by the world. Particularly the cold part. Cool.

The great thing about the Ulu Huvi Mary Jane is its versatility. Cute enough for the office or a party, and comfortable enough to wear with jeans, knocking around on the weekend, at the park, running around doing the every day life thing, kicking back at brunch, chasing after the kids.
