Timex Fitness Tracker : Keep Score and More

After all the workouts I endured running cross country and track in school, I've been quite happy in my adult life to keep it simple and not worry about time and distance so much. As long as I get in an hour-long walk at a brisk pace, I feel like I've accomplished something.

Well, apparently, my efforts have not been enough to balance out my age because I'm getting bigger and I have to work harder to maintain my weight. Honestly, I've gained weight, and the only way I'm going to loose it is to step up my program. With Timex's Fitness Tracker I have just the tool I need to get back on track.

Like many watches in Timex's Ironman Collection, the Fitness Tracker offers essential features that any runner, walker, swimmer or other endurance athlete might need, such as: a chronograph, a timer, an interval timer, a lap counter (this one goes to 99), lap storage (50), and more. Of course it also has the handy Indiglo light, time and date features, and three different alarms (with a 5-minute back up alarm). I can also keep track of two time zones at once. What makes this Ironman watch different is its companion, a digital transmitter.

The tiny rectangular transmitter is essentially a pedometer. It fits easily into the palm of my hand and clips to the waistband of my pants with a sturdy plastic clip. It's super easy to operate: all I have to do is turn it on and press a button on the watch to sync both devices. Then I'm off.

I'm not quite up to interval or lap training, but I like having an idea of how many steps I've taken, how many miles I've covered, and most important, how many calories I've burned. There are all sorts of ways to calibrate the system for various activities and measure different variables.

I like just using it to time my workouts, set an alarm for when I need to be home, and keep track of miles covered and calories burned. i didn't think I'd be into the calorie counter at all -- but it's totally motivating having a number, especially on days I eat a 400- calorie donut that I have to work off.

Available in three colors. The Fitness Tracker is advertised as a women's watch, but I don't see why men can't use it, too. It's certainly big enough for a man's wrist.

Bottom LIne: For serious athletes or folks like me just starting a new fitness program, the Fitness Tracker is a useful and easy-to-use tool.--E.D. (Dec 09)
