Prana Samurai Pullover : Pitch Perfect

Prana has scored yet again with its Samurai pullover, an exceptional performance top for men.

The shirt's best feature is its moisture-wicking abilities. These days I've been doing a lot of multi-pitch climbing, even though it's barely above freezing. What that means is that I need clothing that's going to keep me comfy while I'm climbing and won't leave me cold and miserable while I'm waiting on belay ledges. On the way up the climb, I need a shirt that's breathable so I don't overheat and on that's stretchy so I can reach holds to go upwards. And, of course, the Samurai lets me do this.

Then, while I'm sitting around on belay ledges, I need a shirt that's going to quickly dissipate the sweat I generated on the last pitch, so I don't get cold. I can't stand it when I forget to wear a performance top and wind up freezing as my wet shirt makes me feel cold and clammy. My new Samurai pullover prevents this thanks to its Polartec Power Dry fleece. According to Prana, it wicks moisture twice as fast as cotton.

Another thing I like about the Samurai shirt is that it's pretty form-fitting, so I can throw on extra layers without feeling like I'm cramming myself into into a sardine can. Also, the pullover has no moving parts -- no zippers, no pockets -- so there's nothing to break.

The Samurai is available in a burnt orange, green, and blue. I've got the green version, and it's a very attractive shirt.

Bottom Line: A stretchy, wicking performance top designed for outdoor athletes who need to stay warm, dry, and comfy all day long. -- N.W. (Nov '07)
