Philips Portable Mini Speakers : Sweet Sound, Space-Aged Shape
When I travel, even if I'm only going to be gone for the weekend, I like to take my music with me. What I don't like to do is lug around heavy speakers or lots of cords. So, Philips' Portable Mini Speaker system is ideal for me --it's lightweight, packs easily into an egg-shaped, self-contained little pod (about the size of a small grapefruit), and runs on batteries (3 AAA). All good. What's even better is how cute the individual speakers are. Streamlined and space-aged, they're an elegant and welcome alternative to some of the boxy speakers I've traveled with in the past. The Mini Speakers are so simple to use, too. All I have to do is remove each speaker from the base, and plug in the unit to my iPod or my PowerBook. For speakers in this price range, I think the sound quality is very good. The curved design helps send out a wide sound to fill a room so I don't have to crank the volume to hear my music. Wilco, the Who, Bowie. They all sound great from ground control. No crackles or vibrating, or that tinny sound you get from cheap speakers. These little egg speakers put out a sound that's surprisingly rich. Sweet. Bottom Line: Great design, great sound, and fun to use. I love these little speakers. Maybe your mother would like some for Mother's Day!--E.D.
