Columbia Outback Office Computer Backpack : For Work and Play

I took a working vacation recently to Salt Lake City, and found the Summit Supervisor backpack a great travel gear asset. I was able to haul my laptop in the removable, padded computer sleeve, and bring my CD player and some CDs in the CD pocket and port. In addition to the manila folders and manuscript I needed for work, I also packed magazines, tubes of lotion, a sweater, sandals, a water bottle, books, journal, and various other personal items. The pack was so roomy I even stuffed my medium-sized purse into the largest compartment pocket to meet the two-bag requirement for carry-on luggage when boarding the plane.

This medium-sized day pack is designed to serve as an organizer for e-gear and files. There are three main compartments with so many extra pockets tucked here and there that I occasionally thought I lost a few things, only to find them later, secure inside the pack. The middle compartment has partitions for paper files, which I use often since I travel for work. Each of the main compartments has water-resistant reverse zippers to protect my precious electronic items from the rain (which I have experienced a few times already in late-summer Seattle).

At the top of the pack there’s a sturdy faux-leather handle so you can grab the pack quickly by hand. I found the padded contour straps comfortable, and with the adjustable hip belt, I can distribute the weight better off my shoulders. A good fit is especially helpful when schlepping a heavily loaded suitcase around a large airport. I also use this pack as a day pack in town and on the trail.

Bottom Line: A great concept, well-executed. I really like this pack and look forward to using it on many future work/play adventures.--J.I. (Oct '04)
