Jo-Sha Wipes : Keep Your Yoga Mat Clean
It occurred to me at my last yoga retreat that I might benefit from cleaning my mat, but I didn't want to use a cleanser containing harsh chemicals...(more... )

New Balance 902 : Fleet Feet

I ran my first marathon in 1987 in Honolulu, made every rookie mistake in the book, and collapsed spectacularly at the finish line. In 1996 I managed to qualify for the 100th Boston Marathon, and after that one, my fifth, I felt I could rest on my laurels.   (I love running but hate not being able to walk up stairs for a week afterwards.)   Since I stopped racing I've paid relatively little attention to running shoes, content to wear whatever's on sale for my three-times-a-week training runs.

So when I donned a pair of snazzy orange New Balance 902s last month, I was rather shocked to see how far running shoe technology had progressed while I'd been Rip Van Winkling.

The 902 is designed with something New Balance calls the lightweight Stability Web System.  They pay special attention to the heel and forefoot cushioning, and have designed a mid-sole composed of an ultra-light, high-tech material that's 32% lighter than standard foam -- just 10.2 ounces per kick. That's a fancy way of saying that the shoe is light, dries fast, and is extremely comfortable.

It's snug in the heel, with good arch support and enough room for my gnarly, calloused toes -- but not flimsy like many lightweight racing flats I've worn. Another great feature: the N-Lock integrated lacing, which allows me to adjust the fit quickly and easily. The "sure lace" construction - the shoe strings bulge like peas in a pod for a sure grip - is a small but extremely valuable feature if you've ever been forced to stop mid-run to retie your shoes.

These are the lightest, most comfortable running shoes I've worn.   It's kind of like going barefoot, but better.  If I were going to train for another marathon, I'd most likely opt for a sturdier training shoe and use the 902 on race day. But for my needs - low weekly mileage but hard training - they're perfect.   The 902 was named Editor's Choice by Runner's World magazine, and I'm in complete agreement.

Bottom Line: Lightweight, supportive, quick drying - all in dazzling orange. Perfect for runners looking for a lightweight training or long-distance racing shoe.--J. G. (Mar '07)
