Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt : Beat the Heat
It was too early in the season for hot weather, so I wasn't expecting the morning temperatures to climb into the 90's as I headed into the Carrizo Badlands of Anza-Borrego Desert Park. As early morning began to heat up, I was already using one of the many handy features of my Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt: the button strap that allows me to keep my rolled-up sleeves in place. Under the hot sun, I began to appreciate the SPF 30 protection and the moisture management capabilities of my new shirt. I worked up a good sweat from the hike, and the sanded, lightweight nylon fabric wicked it away, drying quickly. Mesh lining at the shoulders and mesh panels along the sides allowed for great ventilation. Despite two rather rugged days of wear, this shirt stayed crisp and cool. I carried a heavy camera pack, and thanks to the flat seam construction, experienced no pack abrasion on my shoulders--even after hours of hiking. I particularly appreciated a generously-sized vertical pocket on the chest that runs along the button holes. Just enough room to stash (and easily access) a small map and my sunglasses, and it closes with secure Velcro tabs. There is also a traditional chest pocket on the right side of the shirt with a micro zipper. MH has really designed this shirt for the sun traveler, including an extra flap on the collar that can be flipped up to prevent neck burn. This Canyon shirt comes in both men's and women's sizes in a variety of colors. Bottom Line: If you travel or work in hot climates, you'll wish you had a suitcase full of Mountain Hardware Canyon shirts. The SPF protection, combined with a relaxed fit, great look, tough construction, and generous mesh lining for cooling, make this a first-rate garment. E.C. (March 07) Price: $65 Buy Online:
