Montrail Wildwood Trail Shoe : Walks Like A Boot, Runs Like A Shoe
I have a hard time finding shoes because I have a wide forefoot, I wear a custom-made orthotic, and I like my trail shoes pretty stiff and stable through the forefoot. That's a challenging combo to find in a running shoe, but Montrail has delivered exactly what I want, and what I think a lot of trail runners will like, in their Wildwood shoe. It's very stable shoe with a seriously treaded sole that provides both traction and support. With every foot plant, I feel like my foot is cradled in a dense, solid base--as if I'm wearing a heavy hiking shoe or boot. I like that. Still, there's enough flexibility through the forefoot for toeing off. Other factors adding to the shoe's stability are the depth and volume. Even with my full-length cork and leather orthotic, which takes up some room, I still added a full-length Spenco insert to take up some of the volume. The result is a super comfortable, functional ride. I get to use the insole I need, plus the extra cushioning. I also like the lacing system...no grommets or hooks to dig into my skin when I cinch up the shoes tightly, but soft, unnoticeable nylon loops. I really enjoy having this versatile trail shoe for walking, running, and hiking. The rounded toe box give me the room I need up front, the soles keep me grounded, and I like the black mesh, with the red and gray trim. Available in men's and women's sizes. Bottom Line : All-purpose trail shoe that's ideal for high volume feet, runner's who wear orthotics, and anyone else who likes a stable ride. -- E.D.
