Kuhl Team 1/4 Zip : Take the Chill Out
I'd like to say that I wore my Kühl Team ¼ Zip sweater for five straight days because I take my responsibilities as a gear tester so seriously. But the straight dope is that once I put it on this fall I didn't feel like taking it off. Here's why: This long sleeve next-to-skin sweater is made of boiled merino wool, a lightweight material that keeps mountain goats fortified and works splendidly well when you're sitting at sea level on a chilly morning (days 1 through 3), out for a run on a windy 43F morning (day 4), or paddling in the Atlantic (day 5). Kühl advertises that their gear is all about the "fit and fabric." Clever alliteration aside it seems to be so. The Team 14/ Zip is made out of a trademark material called Maxwool Schmart (a deft reference to Maxwell Smart, a.k.a Agent 86, who happens to be one of my all time favorite TV sit-com stars). This washable merino wool isn't that scratchy sweater you got for Christmas as a kid. Nope, this cozy, not-so-top-secret wool has been boiled for an even softer feel - think slightly-pricklier fleece with half the weight, plus it's form fitting without being restrictive. And thanks to the contrast stripping on the arms, it has a bit of pizzazz. An added bonus: ergonomically designed thumb holes at the end of each sleeve for a tight fit. Bottom Line: A lightweight, temperature-regulating garment with a neck-venting zipper that's ideal as a base layer for running, hiking, biking, paddling, or watching Get Smart re-runs.--J.G. (Nov.
