Kokatat Destination Paddling Shirt : Beat the Heat and the Rays
I used to be a sun worshipper, soaking up the rays while out all day on glaciers or water. After a few too many burns and rashes from too much sun, I've changed my tune. Kokatat's Destination paddling shirt made of Supplex® fabric has an SPF of 40+, so it protects my arms from damaging rays while I'm out kayaking all day. I like this shirt because it provides good sun protection and it's well-vented. The mesh ventilation runs along the back, chest, and under the arms (beneath a flap of fabric), preventing me from getting too hot wearing a long-sleeved shirt when the temps rise. The front zipper runs up the length of the collar, so I zip it all the way up or way down depending on the conditions. I've found this to be a good middle layer when it's cooler out in addition to wearing it alone on warmer days. The long cut down the back keeps the shirt from riding up when I'm out kayaking. I also think the longer cut is flattering when I wear it around camp, out hiking, or even around town. I find myself grabbing this shirt a lot when I'm heading out the door and don't want a jacket but need a little extra wind protection. I've worn it layered over a tank during my morning and evening power walks in the cool air. I've worn it to the farmer's market. I've worn it to work (on casual Friday). When I was out kayaking on a brilliantly sunny day on Puget Sound last weekend, I wore this shirt as my only layer on top. It kept me simultaneously protected from the persistent north breeze and cool with the mesh vents. We were out on the water during the prime rays, from 10:00 a.m. until 1 p.m., and although I slathered on SPF 30, my hands (sans gloves) did get slightly pink (I'm pretty fair-skinned). My arms were fine, though. When my sleeves got splashed, they dried very quickly My equally fair-skinned paddling buddy didn't fare so well in the sun protection, opting for a short-sleeved shirt. Now he wants a Destination paddling shirt, too! Available in men's and women's styles. Bottom Line: This lightweight, comfortable top is a good multi-purpose sport shirt. But it's especially great for sun protection during those long days out kayaking or lazing on the beach before and afterwards.--(J. I. Aug 06).
