Keen Taos Sandals : All You Need for Summer

I don't wear sandals as much as I'd like because frankly, I'd like a little bit more protection and better footing when I venture out into the woods. I also demand a firm, stable sole that can handle bumpy hiking trails, wet pavement, river beds, and other tough terrain.

I've finally found my match in Keen's Taos sandal. After testing Keen shoes this spring (click here for review of Keen Bronx), I was eager to see if their sandals had the same thick, firm soles and out-of-the-box comfort. They do, and here's why:

*The Taos is built on a very durable sole with plenty of cushioning and support. It's reinforced through the arch so I have something substantial supporting my weight and my push-off every time I take a step. It's just like wearing a shoe, but with much better ventilation. My feet don't slide around, so I can walk, hike, whatever, without my footwear impeding my progress.

*The rubber sole extends over the front of the sandal so I have a thick rubber toe box protecting my toes when I'm on the trail. It also prevents rocks and twigs from sneaking in between my foot and the sandal.

*The nubuck straps are lined with a soft neoprene mesh so that I don't get blisters when I go sockless (with other sandals I often have to wear socks because the hard leather rips at my skin after walking around for awhile)

*Keen shoes come with a removable cushioned insole that seems more substantial that the flimsy insoles in most sport shoes. I like that the shoe is deep enough to accommodate my full-length orthotics.

*The speed lacing system rocks! All shoes should be so slip-on simple.

Bottom Line: These sandals have totally changed my footwear habits. I get all the benefits of wearing a shoe and a sandal at the same time! I have extra-wide feet, and found the men's style an excellent fit. The Taos sandals are available in several colors in both men's and women's styles. --(E.D. July '05)
