The Kayak Companion by Joe Glickman : Advice from a Seasoned Adventurer

Finally, an instructional book on kayaking that’s both informative AND entertaining. Beginners, as well as veteran sea kayakers wanting to brush up their skills, will enjoy following author Joe Glickman (also a reviewer for this web site) on his amazing and varied personal adventures (and misadventures) throughout this very readable and helpful book.

Although I’m a seasoned recreational sea kayaker (read, mostly weekend warrior) who has taken several courses and on-water clinics over the years, I always find it helpful to reread the basics from different experts’ perspectives. The Kayak Companion served as a good refresher for me on such skill as: how to get in and out of a kayak in different conditions and locations, bracing strokes, and rescue techniques. This little book also provides readers with lists of essential gear for getting started, and must-pack items for longer adventures.

What I enjoyed most about this book is Glickman’s clear writing style that entertains while it instructs and guides. He's been all over the world, and paddled in ultra endurance expeditions and competitions. As I read along, I was transported to the frigid upper Missouri River in freezing conditions, then to the islands of New York’s Jamaica Bay in a whiteout fog. I was braced and energized by his near misses and hard lessons learned through experience.

This book rekindled what got me into kayaking in the first place – a love of remote and wild places, or just being outside in nature away from the 8 to 5 urban routine. He even throws in a little philosophizing now and then that reminded me to look at my life from a different perspective. Based on his suggestions for kayaking destinations, I’m eager to get back out there with renewed enthusiasm, regardless of the season.

Bottom Line: A highly readable book for kayakers of any level or wannabe kayakers.--J.I. (Dec '06)
