Jansport Peace Pack : Flower Power!

I would have killed for a dozen packs like this one seventeen years ago when I was running a summer camp and trying to get a bunch of 12-14 year-old girls turned on to hiking. The camp's old, moldy Army Surplus external frame packs just didn't inspire them. JanSport’s cheery “Flower Power” patterned Peace Pack is sure to inspire a lot of women to get out on the trails this spring and summer.

This pack may remind you of the sixties, but its specs are far from retro. Fun and funky, yes, but it's made out of durable 420 D nylon packcloth (available in blue or organge).

The first time I used this pack was on a day hike in the Champlain Valley and surrounding hills near Woodstock, VT. Right off, what impressed me most were the details that you normally find only in more expensive packs: lightweight internal frame, comfy contoured hip belt and shoulder straps (very female curve-friendly), wicking mesh on the back padding, gear loops galore, a special hydration bladder sleeve…and the list goes on.

My favorite features are the bite valve pockets on the shoulder straps (no more gooky bite valves swinging up to pop me in the eye!) and a front compressor panel that shields gear from foul weather and provides easy-access storage for bulky items, like my monstrous fleece. There’s also a handy side access zipper to get into the main compartment and huge mesh side pockets that I use to store drink bottles, snacks, and hats and gloves.

Women with shorter torsos will enjoy the Peace Pack’s fit and “ride.” I’ve had trouble getting fitted for packs in the past, but this one fit snugly against my back and had excellent balance. Also, the pack’s size is super adjustable: you can cinch it down and use it as a lightweight daypack or use the expansion features to cram its 2200 cubic inches with gear for a 2-3 day overnight trip. I especially liked how the pack rode fairly high, even when packed full; although the pack rested firmly on my hips, the main compartment did not bulge out on the bottom to bonk my posterior. The curved shoulder straps are among the best I’ve ever tried, holding the pack securely, yet leaving me with full range of motion and not squashing my chest in the least.

Bottom Line: A great pack for weekend backpacking trips and everyday use. This pack is especially suited to women with smaller torsos and for teens.—N.W. (Mar 06)
