Injinji Toe Socks : Anti-Blister Foot Glove

I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I first saw Injinji's quarter-length toe sock. Maybe girls in the 70s wore toe socks, but not a rugged guy like me! Could I actually wear a sock that has a little compartment for each one of my toes. Basically, a foot glove?

Of course, I had to try (the quarter sock, from Injinji's Outdoor collection) it....my editor made me.

So in the past several weeks I've been on a lot of trail runs wearing these socks, and there are a few things I really like regardless of the toe compartments. First and foremost, the sock has a double-layer band at its top to prevent the sock from slipping down. It actually does work, and I anticipate the sock will last longer than other socks simply because the elastic there won't wear out as quickly. I also like the tighter weave around the arch -- it seems to make running more comfortable thanks to just a wee bit more support and compression. Last, I really like the merino wool blend that comprises the Outdoor series socks. It's an all natural fiber that's got inherent moisture-wicking and anti-stink properties.

But onto the main selling point--the five-toe design. The socks were pretty weird to put on for the first time since I couldn't stop noticing the extra fabric between my toes, but I got used to them quickly -- especially once I started running. The sensation of the extra fabric between my toes soon morphed into a silky smooth, anti-friction membrane as I chugged up the trail. I started to like how my toes began to slide next to each other, each one doing its job. I also really believe the extra fabric cuts down on blister-causing friction. When I go backpacking, I always wear a liner sock beneath my thick wool backpacking sock so that one rubs against the other (instead of causing blisters). This socks works along the same principle.

And last, if you've got really misshapen little piggies like I do (my middle goes have a short tendon on the bottom, so they're always curled up), the lyrca in the fabric blend will stretch to accommodate.

Available in slate, forest, and lavender for men and women.

Bottom Line :  Breathable, anti-blister sock great for active outdoor pursuits.--N.W. (Nov 08)
