Ibex Rooty V Tee : So Soft People Will Want to Pet You

A while back I took stock of my voluminous t-shirt collection, placed a pile of my most neglected shirts on the floor and challenged my daughter and her two friends to see who could wear the most at once. Countless grunts and giggles later, the sweaty, swollen victor had donned 63. Even after weeding out those tees, I bet I still have 250 stacked in my closet, souvenirs from nearly three decades of racing by land and sea. My point, if I have one, is that I know my way around a t-shirt.

In my not-so-humble opinion there are three major criteria to consider when rating this ubiquitous garment: style, function and comfort. On all fronts, the Rooty V Tee from Ibex passes like a prize-winning ewe at the Vermont State fair.

Let's break it down:

Style : The Rooty has a stretchy, relaxed fit and features contrasting colors on the shoulders and sleeves, a ribbed collar, a cool multi-colored embroidered pillar on the back, and the stylish Ibex icon on the left sleeve. In short, it looks good.

Function : Technology may wait for no barnyard animal, but in a world of Gore-Tex and polyester, Ibex is advancing the idea that nothing tops New Zealand merino wool when it comes to taking strain outdoors. Just because wool is as old as, well, wool, doesn't mean it can't stand up to engineered fabrics. In fact, the Rooty V is quick-drying, anti-wrinkle, anti-microbial (less stink) - not to mention flame-resistant, for folks who like to sit around the camp fire roasting marshmallows.   After I ran and biked for an hour, the shirt was drenched but I wasn't cold or clammy. We're talking major league temperature-regulating-wicking action.

Comfort : While I have a handful of cotton tees that feel as luxurious as silk sheets, they're so old and thread-bare that I wear them with the perilous uncertainty that each outing could be its last. The Rooty V is so soft that little kids (perhaps even a big kid or two) will want to pet you. I would just advise you to hold out for a handful of grain.

Ibex makes luxurious baselayers, tees, and other outdoor apparel for men and women.

Bottom Line: At $95 this handsome t-shirt is expensive, but it's quite possibility the mother lode of all t-shirts: an extremely comfortable (thanks to the super-fine 17.5 Merino weave), durable, anti-everything (you don't want) garment that you can you wear to the gym, sheering sheep, or out on the town.--J.G. Worldwide there are more than 12,000 species of ferns. In New Zealand, the silver fern is the national symbol. According to Maori culture, the unfurling tip of the fern, called a "koru," represents the cycle of life and death. This image is often used in art and jewelry.
