Ex Officio Pants : Lightweight, Convertible, Bug-Free

When I go hiking, or on vacation, I need pants that can cover a lot of territory. Ex Officio's Buzz Off Convertible Pants have become a must-pack item.

First, there are all those handy pockets: two velcro-sealed back pockets, two deep front pockets, and two small hidden pockets located in one of the front pockets (one velcro enclosure and one with zipper enclose). So I have room for my cash, a few credit cards or a slim wallet, keys (there's also a key loop in one of the front pockets), lip balm, a small map, my digital camera (the Pentax Optio S), and a nutrition bar.

The other thing I love about these pants - I can unzip the ankle zippers if I want to roll them up to wade in a stream or I can zip off the legs, turning the pants into shorts. This type of flexiblity comes in handy when I need to pack light and when I'm out on the trail and the weather changes.

These pants are part of Ex Officio's Buzz Off line, and come treated with an insect repellent designed to keep bugs at bay. I didn't get any mosquito bites on my legs when I wore these pants...I don't know if that's because of the repellent or simply having my legs covered. Either way, in this time of West Nile Virus, it's nice to have the extra protection.
