Dunham Mountain Master Hiking Boots : Back to Basics

Call me old fashioned, but I still love Norwegian welt hiking boots. I don't need a lot of technology, or plastic, or fancy designs. Just a good, sturdy, simple boot.

Dunham's Mountain Master boots are made in Italy with Vibram soles and one-piece leather construction, with the added bonus of a seam-sealing waterproofing treatment. The boots are lined with extra soft glove leather that extends around the ankle padding. The bright red laces are the icing on the cake for a classic looking welt boot.

Like all welt boots, the Mountain Masters take some time to break in, but over time, they'll mold to your foot for a perfect fit. And they'll last forever. I'd still be wearing my last pair of welt boots if I hadn't outgrown them.

I like the stable ride I get in the Mountain Masters . The rugged Vibram sole achieves what thicker soles offer in a much denser, closer-to-the-ground platform. (Some boots feel like you're walking in heels.) I feel like I'm more in contact with the ground, yet totally protected from rocks, protruding roots, and other potentially painful obstacles. They also provide excellent traction on the trail. With a firm sole, the boots allow my feet to roll from heel to toe without excessive forefoot flexion--so my feet can endure long hikes.

Bottom Line: For purists lilke me, the Mountain Master is an excellent boot for serious hiking and backpacking.--E .D. (June '05)
