Danner ExoEdge Trail Shoe : Lightweight and Breathable

I usually like wearing heavy leather hiking boots with thick, firm soles for most of my trail outings because my feet get sore fairly quickly, so I wasn't sure that Danner's new Exo Edge multi-sport shoe would work for me.

I was wrong. This lightweight, highly breathable trail shoe has been a pleasure to wear on short hikes and on long walks. I have a very wide foot, and found the Exo Edge to be a perfect fit. In fact, it's a bit of a high volume shoe, so I'm able to use my thick, full-length custom insoles. That's always a bonus.

I like the dark gray suede/orange stripe combo -- the shoes are both simple and eye catching. I love the quick-lace system, with nylon loops. Too many trial shoes have grommets that dig into my foot when I lace up the shoe tight.

The Exo Edge has a great tread on the outer sole, so I get the traction I need on slippery rocks and wet pavement. The sole is obviously more flexible than a hiking boot sole but still thick enough for the stability I like.

I think Danner has done a great job with this shoe. They've combined superior breathability in a shoe that also provides protection and stability. I have too many "breathable" running shoes in my closet that I never wear because the mesh material is too flimsy to support my feet. Not so with the Exo. Suede and synthetic material cover the base of the shoe and wrap around the toe box.

Bottom Line: These are all-around trail shoes that are ideal for warm weather climates. Danner also makes an Exo version with GoreTex for hikers who want water protection, and mid-height boot. A women's Exo Edge will be released in spring 2009.--E.D. (Jan 08)
