Blundstone 550 Suede Boots : For Men and Women

I have big old feet, and I like big old boots. I especially like big old boots that come in men's and women's styles and sizes. That way, if the women's boots I want don't come in wide widths, I can just slip into a men's size.

The last time I wear tested a pair of Blunnies, I believe they where from Blundstone's TPU line that has extra thick soles. Loved them, so I wasn't sure a regular soled boot like the 550 would be sturdy enough for me. So, here's what happened:

I opened up the box, touched the soft, chocolate brown suede, and thought, "s_ _ _, these are some fine boots." Then I replaced the insoles with my full-length cork and leather insoles, took a few steps around, and noticed immediately that the 550 is a different boot entirely from the TPU line, and that it has so many things to offer.

First, the fit. The 550 is a high volume boot, so Blundstone includes an extra dense foam pad to wear underneath the insole for people who either want more padding or want a snugger fit. I like my boots a bit baggy, so I don't use the extra insole.

Another bonus for me: the 550 has wide fit across the widest area of the forefoot, a roomy, rounded toe box, and heel cup that feels narrower than I'd expect in such a roomy boot. I love it. Suede gives a much different type of fit because it's so pliable, but the heel fit keeps my feet from flopping around inside the big boot.

I've also been impressed by the sole - it's plenty thick enough, and has a good shock absorption system called SPS (Shock Protection System). The 550 actually employs an SPS x-tra sole that, in addition to using EVA cushioning (a material often used in midsoles) adds Poron, a thin but highly shock absorbent material, in the heel. Bottom line, the soles are plenty thick and stable enough for me to wear all day long without experiencing foot fatigue.

Like all Blundstone soles, the 550's is oil and acid resistant thanks to a urethane outer sole. You can wear them into your mechanics garage and you won't ruin them. The sole also provides good traction on slippery surfaces.

Bottom Line: These fun boots have become my end-of-winter essentials. I love the pull-on style and the roomy fit. The 550s look great with khakis and jeans, and best of all, they somehow make my feet look smaller and cuter.--E.D. (March 09)
