Asics Gel Nimbus 10 Running Shoe : Spidey Powered

If Spiderman ever decided to get around on foot, or even do some cross training, I think he'd love the Asics Gel Nimbus 10 running shoe. So would his marathoner girlfriend.

For starters, these lightweight, super cushioned shoes are clearly designed as an homage to the crime-fighting webbed one. Underneath the trademark Asics stripes (black and silver on this model), there's a shiny, red and black webbed material extending to the heel, where the pattern is continued in a stretchy nylon mesh that wraps around the heel tab. The rest of the upper is covered in a stiff black honeycomb mesh and swirls of asymmetrical silver material. Wow!

Normally, I like my shoes to keep quite, but I love these dazzling shoes. I also love what Asics does for my feet.

The Nimbus has a thick, even midsole that incorporates their proprietary gel cushioning system in the heel and forefoot. So that's good for landing. What makes Asics my favorite running shoe company is how their soles influence my takeoff. The midsole feels the same thickness along the length of my foot, so when I toe off my foot doesn't slide forward at all. Just as I move through the step, the midsole tapers just perfectly so when my big toes hits, I've got padding in all the right places and my foot is positioned to do what it needs to do -- there's no fighting the shoe. Bam!

For a cushioned shoe, the Nimbus is also pretty stable. It's built on a wide last, which helps--there's a wider platform on which to land. The various stripes and swirls of material also help truss my feet. All this in a lightweight shoe that doesn't feel clunky (personally, I love heavy, clunky running shoes - but those days are long gone). I can grab each end of the shoe and try to twist it in the middle -- and the shoe doesn't give it up.

I also wear a custom-made orthotic to prevent pronation so I'm covered either way.

Bottom Line:  If you're looking for a cushioned ride without the wobbles, the Nimbus 10 is ideal. It's also available in extra wide widths and in three color schemes. Available in men's and women's sizes. --E.D. (Jan 09)
