Adidas Supernova Cushion Running Shoe : This One's a Keeper

If 26 years as a competitive runner taught me one thing, it is this—when you find of pair of running shoes that work, stick with them. This isn’t always as easy as it sounds because running shoe companies have a discouraging tendency to discontinue styles after a time or “improve” them in ways that make them no longer palatable. That being said, let me be clear that my latest and easily longest running shoe love affair has been with the Adidas Supernova, and, at least 50 pairs later, we’re still going hot and heavy.

When asked to try the Supernova Cushion, I had to wonder if the “cushion” was a step in the right direction. Having run in it quite a few times now, I’d say that, like the Supernova (which Adidas still makes), the Supernova Cushion is worthy of monogamy.

Feather-light but suitable for the long run

When I first picked it up out of the box, I wondered if I’d been sent racing flats—the Supernova Cushion is that light. This was all the more a surprise given that usually a “cushiony” shoe will tend to be a bit heavier and geared for a heavier runner. Despite its light weight, the Supernova Cushion provides substantial support. I tend to prefer a stiffer shoe and though the Supernova Cushion has a somewhat softer feel, it’s still very responsive.

Crafted for comfort

The Supernova Cushion exemplifies Adidas’ intelligent design. A plush tongue and almost pillowed upper portion hug around my ankle while the remainder of the upper is made of a multi-layered, nearly diaphanous mesh that allows prodigious air flow. It'll keep my feet cool in even the hottest conditions. Though not as curve-lasted as the Supernova, the Supernova Cushion still provides the roomy toe box that I love. And in true Adidas form, the Supernova Cushion looks good, in no small part because it employs tasteful amounts of the world’s finest color—orange.

Bottom LIne: Intriguing offshoot of the tried and true Supernova line—by my estimation the finest running shoe yet created. Light and airy, the Supernova provides a soft yet substantial ride. A real pleasure to wear and reasonably priced to boot.--D.C. (Jan 06)
